Cinemazoa- Power Rangers (2017)

Join me, if you will, on voyage across the ethers of time to magical place…called 2017. It was a weird time in superhero cinema. Batman and Superman were fighting over…something. It wasn’t very clear but boy were they mad about it. The avengers broke up like the Beatles. And Wolverine was dead? Is that physically possible? His power is not dying. Absolutely bonkers. All this going on, it was easy to for one superhero movie to fly under the radar. That was Power Rangers. Written off as a flop, Saban Entertainment’s blockbuster reboot of their decade spanning television franchise reinvented the teenagers with attitude into teenagers with actual attitude. The superpowered marital artist do-gooders were now the breakfast club. For some it didn’t seem to work. For me? I loved it. Here was an instance where teen angst drama actually worked. The film really took its time to flesh out the individual rangers. We connected with them and got to really see their what their personal hurtles and tribulations were. The film also does a pretty good job of modernizing the familiar elements of the franchise. The power coins, the command center, the morphing grid mythology. Bryan Cranston sells a new take on Zordon. Elizabeth Banks hams is up as Rita Repulsa. Bill Hader is silly as Alpha 5. All in all it brings warm human drama to the more ridiculous power ranger trappings and takes itself seriously, but not too seriously. And when the Zords are let off the chain, it’s awesome. I really wish it would get a sequel instead of ANOTHER reboot, but I grew up loving iteration after iteration of the Rangers, and I’ll continue to do so. So strap in and put you’re feet up. It’s morphin time.
